Taking the bed off a Ford pickup is either straightforward or a complete nightmare, and the deciding factor is usually the bolts. Ford pickup bed mounting bolts are a known Torx Plus application — and if you attack rusted ones with a standard Torx bit, you will round at least one.
The Torx Plus problem
Torx Plus uses the same 6-lobe layout as standard Torx but with squarer lobes and flatter tips. That means a standard Torx bit drops in and will turn the fastener — it just cannot carry full torque, because the fit is loose and only the lobe tips make contact.

Now stack the real conditions on top: bed bolts sit exposed to road spray, salt, and a decade of grit. They are frequently seized solid. A loose bit fit plus a seized bolt is where the head goes.
Bed bolt removal, in order
- Soak them early. Penetrating oil on every bolt, then leave it. Hours, not minutes. Reapply. This single step prevents most stripped bolts.
- Clean the recess out. Wire brush and pick out the packed dirt and rust. A bit cannot seat fully in a recess half full of debris — that alone causes cam-out.
- Confirm the fastener system. Look at the lobes. Squarer with flat tips means Torx Plus. Wobble your Torx bit — play means you are in a Plus recess and should stop.
- Seat fully, then load. Push the bit home, verify minimal rock, then apply force.
- Steady leverage, not hammering. Long handle, straight pull. Shock it sharply if it is stuck rather than slowly winding torque into the recess.
- Heat if needed. Careful heat breaks corrosion — mind fuel lines, wiring, and the tank.
- Support the bed before the last bolts. Straps or a lift, and enough people. A bed is awkward more than it is heavy.
The right tool
A 3/8″ drive Torx Plus bit socket is what you want here. Bed bolts are recessed and often at awkward angles under the rails, and 3/8″ drive lets you run extensions and a breaker bar to put real straight-line force on a rusted bolt.

If one is already rounded
Bed bolts are one of the better places for this to happen, because access is usually decent. Options in order of preference: a spiral-flute bolt extractor socket, welding a nut to the head, then drill and extract as a last resort. All three take longer than having the correct bit before you started.
